Surface Embellishments (Practical)

1. To familiarize students with various techniques of surface ornamentation for value addition
2. To enable the students to understand application of various surface enrichments for apparel and home furnishings

 Content

• Market Survey of structural and applied design in reference to variations in fibre, yarn, fabric construction, embroidery, dyeing, printing, finishes.

• Geometrical, simplified, naturalized, stylized, abstract and ornamental motifs
• Enlargement and reduction, growth of motif
• Placement and repeats of all over patterns
• Combining motifs big and small implementation of different sources
• Colour consideration : Color harmonies and color ways
• Steps in design process : Inspiration, identification, Conceptualization, Exploration, Modeling, Communication, Production

• Basis hand and machine stitches:

1. Filling and outline stitches
2. Cut work, Applique work, smocking, shirring and crochet

• Edging:  Lace, Piping, Beads, Fringes                        
• Different type of printing and colours and dyes used. A project  on tie and dye, batik, stencil, screen and block printing                                
• Indian textiles

Students will prepare a scrap file of the topics covered.

• Woven Designs : Concept of design repeat translation in the form of peg plans and drafts, understanding basic and decorative weaves, Colour way, calculations of yarn requirement.
• Knitted Designs : concept of design repeat, patterning in knits, calculation of your requirement.
• Visit of basic dyeing and printing units
