Commencement of the trip-September 6, 2012

The journey started with 20 students and 2 faculty members from the ICG university campus at 6 am in the morning and reached AEPC. At AEPC, the students were shown the institute and its various facilities specifically the Knowledge Management Center, which consisted of books, magazines and various samples of garments, fabrics and trims, meticulously preserved together under one roof as well as the subscription of the leading fashion forecasting organization- the WGSN.

Besides, the students were given a demonstration of making beaded flowers using glass beads and steel wires. They were then taken to the garment construction lab and were given a demonstration on various stitching machines and pattern making software; Optitex.

September 7, 2012

The day started early at 8:30 in the morning when students were ready for their visit to 2 institutes, the NITRA and FDDI. Here they learnt about the various fabric & textile testing techniques and various machines which are used for the same. Some of the textile testing machines included machines to test the bursting strength, tensile strength & fire resistance. The students were also given some invaluable inputs by Mr. Vivek Agrawal and Mr. Kushagrah Tyagi about working of fashion industry and importance of doing a post- graduate studies and the best part was when these experts volunteered to conduct workshops at ICG.

Thanking the people from NITRA on being so hospitable and humble to us, we continued our  journey to our next destination, i.e. Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI). The students were made to settle in auditorium where they were briefed upon FDDI. We were then escorted by a group of gracious and warm students of FDDI, who escorted our students to various departments of FDDI, where our students learnt the intricacies of pattern making, and construction techniques involved in making shoes was exhibited.

September 8, 2012

Last day of the tour was dedicated towards sourcing the rare fabrics from Nehru Place which is  one of the biggest markets of fabrics in Asia. Here the students were explored various shops selling different fabrics like schiffli laces, linens, knits, velvets etc. They visited some of the biggest stores of fabrics in India like Sahanis, textorium and HP Singh and co.

Scope

Besides, a great learning experience, the visit was a revelation of various opportunities and challenges, one has to face while progressing in the field of Fashion Technology. So, while having volunteered to share their rare expertise, NITRA & FDDI opened for our students the option to work upon their ongoing & potential projects and research.

Conclusion

The trip concluded with a new positive beginning for the students of expanding their creative horizons. Hopefully the students are able to extend and reflect their learning practically into their work. We look forward for such educational trips in future too.
